Formless

Formless is defined as having no clear physical existence. The work highlights the senseless dehumanization of undocumented immigrants. It makes visible the invisible and permanent the disposable. The images printed on takeout boxes and napkins are family photos where every undocumented immigrant’s face is erased. Formless is an acknowledgement of erasure from a country that benefits from the labor of undocumented immigrants but cuts off the “American Dream” to its geographical neighbors, most with ancestral ties to U.S. territory. It is a testament to the people who are called “aliens” and then are kicked out of the U.S., specifically those who work in the service and hospitality industry, often serving the very people who want to see them gone. This project invites the viewer to bear witness to the fleeting nature of the migrant body and the state of insecurity of mixed-status families.
